- Thunbergia erecta is commonly known as Kings Mantle or Clock Bush. It is a moderately large, upright, densely branched woody shrub native to tropical Africa that grows to about 6 feet tall and equally wide and produces abundant, medium-sized, slightly curved trumpet-shaped flowers in vibrant purple with yellow throats throughout the year in warm climates. It is an easy-care, old heirloom favorite that has graced Southern gardens for decades.
- It is a tough, resilient plant that requires only basic care to thrive and bloom, and that can be used in many versatile and interesting ways. It is a good choice for a tall-growing boundary, background, or privacy hedge, makes an eye-catching accent or transitional feature in mixed perennial beds, or can be grown as a large outdoor garden pot.
- Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil in full sun to very light afternoon only shade. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants will be spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer initially and repeat annually in spring. Prune after flowering to control size and remove seed.
- Indoor Growing: This plant can be grown indoors, however modifications to increase light, temperature and humidity may be necessary for it to produce flowers.
- Climate: This is a semi-tropical plant and is recommended for growing in USDA Zones 8B 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and do not consider factors such as humidity, rainfall, or day/night temperature variations.
